How to Crop a PDF's Margins or Page Area
September 23, 20264 min readHow PDF cropping works, the difference between cropping and resizing, and how to trim margins or isolate part of a page.
Cropping a PDF trims the visible page area down to just the part you want — cutting off wide margins before printing, isolating a chart or table from a page full of text, or removing a scanner’s black border from a scanned document. It’s a different operation from resizing: the content itself doesn’t move or scale, the page’s visible window just gets smaller.
What cropping actually does
Every PDF page has a defined boundary called the crop box, which determines what part of the page content is shown and printed. Cropping doesn’t delete any content or redraw anything — it just moves that boundary inward, hiding whatever falls outside it. That’s why cropping is lossless and instant, even on pages with a lot of content.
How to crop a PDF
- Upload your file to the Crop PDF tool. The first page renders as a preview (use the page arrows to crop a different one).
- Click and drag on the preview to draw a box around the area you want to keep.
- Check “apply to all pages” if every page should be cropped the same way, proportional to its own size.
- Download the cropped PDF.
Cropping one page vs. the whole document
By default, the crop only applies to the page you drew it on — handy for pulling one figure or table out of a longer report. Turning on “apply to all pages” scales the same selection proportionally to every other page’s dimensions, which is what you want for trimming a consistent margin off an entire scanned document.
Crop vs. resize
It’s worth being clear on the difference: cropping hides part of the existing page without touching content scale, while resizing would shrink or stretch everything to fit a new page size. If a scanned page has a wide black border, cropping removes it cleanly; if you actually need the page to be a different paper size, that’s a separate job.
A note on privacy
The crop preview renders with pdf.js and the final crop is applied with pdf-lib, both running entirely in your browser. Your file is never uploaded — the whole thing, including the drag selection, happens on your own device.
